When Loose Fill Beats Foam

Blown-in insulation is often the right choice for the main attic floor of a Levittown house. It goes in fast, fills around joists and wires, and reaches high R-values for much less than spray foam would cost over the same area. The key is that it does not stop air on its own, so we seal the ceiling leaks first and then blow the fill to depth over the top.

Cellulose vs fiberglass

Cellulose is made mostly from recycled paper treated for fire and pests. HomeGuide lists it at about R-3.1 to R-3.8 per inch, and it packs tightly enough to slow air somewhat. Loose fiberglass is lighter, does not absorb water, and settles less over time; HomeGuide puts it around R-2.2 to R-2.9 per inch. Fixr lists installed fiberglass at $1.65 to $2.60 per square foot and cellulose at $1.75 to $3.80. Either works on an attic floor. We tell you which we suggest for your attic and why.

How deep

ENERGY STAR's zone 4A guidance is R-60 for an attic with no insulation, or adding R-49 when three to four inches are already there. In fiberglass, that is roughly 17 to 22 inches of new material; in cellulose, somewhat less. We install depth markers so you can see what went in.

Dense-pack walls

Blown-in is also how we insulate closed walls. Cellulose blown at high density through small holes fills each stud bay and resists settling. It is a practical fix for the thin or empty walls common in houses built in the 1950s and earlier, including many in Bristol, Morrisville and Fairless Hills.

Before we blow

We check for ventilation at the soffits and add baffles, box around recessed lights that need clearance, build a dam around the hatch, and make sure bath fans vent outside. Blowing insulation over an unsealed, unvented attic just buries the problems.

Blown-In Insulation Questions

Is blown-in cheaper than spray foam?

Per square foot, yes, usually by a wide margin. HomeGuide lists blown-in at $1.00 to $2.80 per square foot versus $1.50 to $5.00 for foam. On an open attic floor, sealing plus blown-in is often the better value.

Does blown-in insulation settle?

Cellulose settles a little after install, which is accounted for in the installed depth. Fiberglass settles less. We blow to the depth needed after settling.

Can you blow insulation over what is already there?

Yes, if the existing insulation is dry and clean. Wet, moldy or rodent-damaged material should come out first.

How long does a blown-in attic job take?

Most single-family attics take a day or less, including the air sealing. Dense-pack walls take longer because of drilling and patching.
